Brief Intro to Cancer

You've just been told. The diagnosis is cancer. Feelings of fear and apprehension are normal for you and your family at this time. But you should also know that more people are surviving cancer than ever before, thanks to early detection, more accurate diagnosis, improved surgical techniques, effective new drug treatments and more exact radiation treatments.

We are here to give you as much information as possible about your disease. With knowledge comes greater understanding of how you, your family and your team at the Dreiling Schmidt Cancer Center at Hays Medical Center can work together to develop a treatment program.

The Dreiling Schimidt Cancer Center at Hays Medical Center's philosophy is to provide you with the best in compassionate care and to help you understand and improve your health. We support health care as a component of rural life by combining tertiary services in a rural delivery system using primary care physicians, dedicated oncologists, and the latest technology.

We live our vision and are guided by values of respect, compassion, spirituality, trustworthiness, excellence, and professionalism.

We use a team approach to comprehensive cancer care by bringing together those people and facilities necessary for such care. The Dreiling Schmidt Cancer Center at Hays Medical Center provides not only for the physical needs of the patient but also for the ongoing emotional, social, and spiritual support of the patient and family.

Oncology care is a multidisciplinary and coordinated approach to patient care. We view cancer as a chronic illness with intermittant acute episodes. We provide a comprehensive ongoing treatment and support system for persons with cancer using physicians, nurses, therapists, medical physicists, dieticians, social workers, clergy, and other healthcare professionals - along with the patient's own strengths and family resources.

Our goal is to assist those at risk for cancer development and to provide a seamless continuum of care for patients with cancer and support for their families. We recognize each individual's unique physiological, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.

A person with cancer has a right to know the disease, prognosis, plan of treatment and will be included in the decision making.
