What is Occupational Therapy?

A health and rehabilitation profession that helps individuals achieve independence in their lives despite disabilities. It is a skilled treatment provided by professionals. Occupational therapy also takes a personal and direct approach to meeting an individual's health needs and wants.

An Occupational Therapist requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree from a five year AOTA accredited occupational therapy school. Passage of state board exam is required to become certified and licensed to practice. An occupational therapist can also enter the field with a master's or a doctoral degree.

Our outpatient staff consists of 4 nationally certified and state licensed Occupational Therapists.

The Certified occupational therapy assistants, or COTA's, are skilled health care providers who work under the supervision of occupational therapists. Requires a two year Associate degree from an accredited occupational therapy assistant school. Candidates must pass a state board exam after graduation to become certified to practice.

  • joint replacement
  • visual/perceptual loss
  • cerebellar vestibular loss
  • macular degeneration
  • heart disease/surgery
  • lung disease
  • cancer
  • brain injury
  • orthopaedic injury
  • fibromyalgia
  • chronic pain conditions/myofacscial syndrome
  • arthritis.

Here at The Center for Health Improvement we believe in Teamwork. Our Outpatient Rehabilitation Services Department is no exception. Our staff is divided into four skilled Teams with patient care at the center. Supported by our physicians and managers, each Team is specialized to meet your needs.

The four Teams in our department are:
  • General Orthopaedic Team
  • Hand Care Center Team
  • Neurological Rehabilitation Team
  • Sports Medicine Team
These Teams are made up of certified athletic trainers, physical therapist, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and speech/language pathologists.
