Medical Oncology
A Medical Oncologist is a physician who specializes in the study or treatment of cancer. This type of physician is a specialist in internal medicine and has completed special education and training in the study of cancer. A Hematologist is a physician who specializes in the study or treatment of blood disorders. These specialists coordinate the chemotherapy treatment plan and care for the patients.
Medical Oncology Services has two full-time Medical Oncologists who provide care to patients in the department and in the Inpatient Oncology Unit. Another member of the oncology team is a Hematologist/Oncologist from the University of Kansas Medical Center who is at the Dreiling Schmidt Cancer Center at Hays Medical Center several times each month. He also sees patients via the interactive telemedicine system. The affiliation with the University of Kansas Medical Center is an asset to the excellent services provided by the Medical Oncology team.
The nursing staff is a group of highly skilled and caring professionals. Some of our nurses are credentialed as Oncology Certified Nurses by the Oncology Nursing Society. All of our nurses are specially trained to coordinate the care, treatment, and education of patients and their families.
